The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications from candidates with the proven skills, qualifications and abilities for student positions in our Parks Department. We are hiring students to fill a total of eight (8) positions in our Parks Department on a full-time, temporary basis from approximately May 1 to August 30, 2024. Additional positions may be added, which are dependent upon receipt of a grant (to qualify for the grant-funded positions, the successful candidate must be between the ages 17 and 30 inclusive). The duties for the Parks Student position will vary and may involve tasks related to parks and sports field maintenance or trail maintenance and construction. Tasks for parks and sports field maintenance may involve: operating parks machinery, garbage/litter pickup, painting, cleaning washrooms and general labouring. Tasks for trail maintenance and construction may involve: assisting in building new segments of mixed-use trails; performing rehabilitation and restoration on heavily impacted and temporarily inactive sections of trail; clearing brush and fallen logs from trail corridors; cleaning, repairing, and constructing both natural and rock drains; helping with the installation of log and rock retainer bars and steps; restoring and enhancing fish habitat; and removing invasive species and replanting to repair stream channels. Preferred candidates will have experience with labour-intensive jobs, such as landscape and grounds maintenance, trail maintenance and construction, general construction, farm labouring, painting, and use of related equipment, power tools, and machinery.
