BACKGROUND : Since 1952, Beacon Group has been creating opportunities for people with disabilities across Southern Arizona, Phoenix and beyond. As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, Beacon serves over 1,700 people with disabilities each year. Beacon provides job training and placement, supported and center-based employment, and day treatment programs to assist the more than two-thirds of working-age people with disabilities who do not have a job. POSITION INTRODUCTION: The General Maintenance Worker performs general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings, requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in such trades as painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work.This position is part of the Ability One program which requires candidates to meet the Ability One definition of disabled. Specifically," a person who has a severe physical or mental impairment which so limits the person's functional capabilities that the individual is unable to engage in competitive employment over an extended period of time." Vacation, sick leave and extended sick leave plus holidays and floating holidays. Primary Responsibilities Replace electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors. Patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings. Repair or replace sinks, water coolers, and toilets. Tape or paint areas of the floor for equipment staging. Paint structures and equipment. Use appropriate chemicals and solvents to clean industrial plant equipment and machinery. Minor maintenance of facilities to include replace door handles, replace light bulbs, etc. Repair or replace concrete floors, steps, sidewalks, damaged paneling, floor tiles, and windowpanes. Perform general maintenance on equipment and machinery. Operate equipment such as scissor lifts for operations. Other Responsibilities Attend regular safety meetings and trainings to maintain a safe working environment for all customers and employees. Essential Abilities Meet physical demands which includes frequent lifting/carrying 50+ pounds. Computer skills to include internet navigation, Windows Operating System, and familiarity with Web Based Software. Able to effectively communicate with other Beacon employees and customers both verbally and email. QUALIFICATIONS Required High School Diploma or GED. Ability to obtain and maintain access to a military installation through a background check. Valid State Driver's License. 1-year experience performing trade work such as painting, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry. Beneficial Experience working in an industrial environment. Experience working in a military setting. Current forklift certification. Experience using industrial cleaning equipment such as floor buffers and shampooers. Previous experience performing general data entry into an electronic database. Because we participate in the Ability One program, preference will be given to individuals with a documented disability.
