Visit Duties As the Director, the incumbent will: Serve as a senior scientific advisor to the Office of Science (OS) Director and members of the OS senior leadership team, which includes senior scientists who serve as Office-level Directors. Advise the Director on the scientific direction, scope, content, management, and dissemination of scientific publications, and provide leadership and oversight for the d publication of scientific reports and dissemination channels managed by the Office. Advise CDC senior leadership, including the CDC Director and Principal Deputy Director, Director of the Office of Science, Director of the Office of Communications, and CDC CIO and program leadership to assure scientific integrity, quality, and evidence base for CDC reports. Serves as Editor-In-Chief for Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (MMWR) and provides the scientific and editorial vision for the journal. Frequently engage scientific leaders and staff across the agency to provide scientific and technical consultations to assure the evidence base for CDC guidelines and recommendations. Direct research and/or evaluation activities related to scientific publication and information dissemination by providing oversight and guidance for that supports audience research and evaluation through formative, process, and outcome evaluation, and activities such as quantitative program and impact evaluation and trend analysis. Supervise and lead a large unit of scientific, technical, and editorial staff, including senior scientists with broad scientific and public health expertise. Exercise leadership to ensure all programs under his/her direction reflect the principles of workforce diversity in their management and operation in such areas as recruitment and staffing, employee development, staff assignments and communications. This position may require a Drug Test and be subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result. Qualifications Current federal employees must be at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level or above to be considered for this position. Basic Qualifications for RF-0601: Applicants must possess a degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to the basic qualifications requirement, a Ph.D. in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position is required.Candidates must show clear evidence of specialized experience.Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as serving as a senior advisor providing scientific and editorial vision of scientific journal and reports including strategic direction, scope, content management, dissemination platforms, impact analysis and ensuring scientific quality, integrity, and evidence based standards.Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
